Jesus was born of a virgin maiden, fathered by God as His mother was “overshadowed by the power of the Highest” (Luke 1:35). He was named by God’s angel even before He was conceived in Mary’s womb (Luke 2:21). A name designates a person, thing or family. It identifies and points to a reputation. Rothchild, Kennedy, Trump are names of highly gifted and successful people. In time they will be forgotten by men. One man by his wisdom delivered a little city when a great king besieged it (Ecclesiastes 9:14), but he was forgotten. The name of Jesus will never be forgotten but will be repeated in glorious praises throughout eternity. One day every knee will bow before the Son of God named Jesus Christ and every tongue will confess His name (Romans 14:11).
“Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15) and those who accept salvation in Him make up the great family called Christians. Believers “are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26). By him we are saved from sin’s penalty of death in Hell and all the torments of evil in this life. He is the One for whom God’s “whole family in heaven and earth is named” (Ephesians 3:15).
Children inherit their fathers’ traits and wealth. Members of God’s family take on His nature by His Spirit (Galatians 5:22 – 25) and are heirs of great riches of which they have an earnest now and full enjoyment in eternity. God wants us to know Him and His vast provision for us.
“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come” (Ephesians 1:18 – 21).
He is Christ the Anointed. He’s anointed to heal broken hearts, give the saving gospel to all men and set the captive and the bruised free (Luke 4:18). He is Emmanuel who brings God to us and us to God (Matthew 1:23). The angel told Joseph to call Him Jesus because He would save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21). Isaiah said, “His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
Peter and John healed a lame man who sat and begged alms daily before the Temple and when people looked upon them in awe and wonder as though they had the power or holiness to heal, Peter said “And [Jesus’] name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all” (Acts 3:16).
The composer says, “Take the name of Jesus with you, Child of sorrow and of woe, It will joy and comfort give you, Take it then where’re you go.”
